On Tuesday 31 May, six friends from Hertfordshire crossed the finish line of their challenge of collectively walking a million steps in May, raising funds and awareness for Parkinson’s research.

The challenge was inspired by superstar supporter Joyce Cook, who in April 2020, walked over 300,000 steps.

This year, determined to take it up a notch, Joyce along with friends Gill and Tony Wright, Kate O’Malley, Eleanor Palmer and Leena Inkinen set themselves the challenge of collectively walking a million steps throughout May in a bid to raise awareness and funds for Cure Parkinson’s. With the average age being over 80, the team knew this would be no mean feat but we are thrilled to announce that they not only smashed their target, but reached it twice over, walking two million and five steps!

With Fitbits to track their progress, the team met every Friday morning at a local café to tally their progress and discuss their fundraising.

Sunshine greeted the team as they walked their final steps of the challenge on Chorleywood Common, where they were congratulated by the Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire, Robert Voss, the Queen’s representative in the county and patron of Cure Parkinson’s.

Everyone at Cure Parkinson’s would like to thank Joyce, Gill, Tony, Kate, Eleanor and Leena for their tremendous dedication and fundraising efforts.
